Set up your media station

Two ways — pick either. No expertise required.

Option 1: one command

Paste this one command into the terminal of a Raspberry Pi or any Linux computer. We handle the rest.

curl -fsSL https://get.sontrove.com/install.sh | sudo sh

Option 2: flash a ready-made image

Download our prebuilt system image, flash it to an SD card, insert and boot.

  1. Download the image file
  2. Flash it to an SD card (16GB+) with Raspberry Pi Imager or balenaEtcher
  3. Insert, power on, and follow the on-screen (or in-app) pairing steps

For the security-minded, verify your download against the checksums file: SHA256SUMS

No Raspberry Pi? Use your Mac

The media station installs as a background service that starts with your Mac.

Easiest: download the installer package, double-click it, and follow the prompts. The admin page opens when it's done.

Not sure which one? Open the Apple menu in the top-left corner → About This Mac, and look at the Chip or Processor line.

The Intel build has so far been tested only under Rosetta on an Apple silicon Mac, not yet on an actual Intel Mac.

Or paste this one command into Terminal; it does the same thing:

curl -fsSL https://get.sontrove.com/install.sh | sudo sh
  • Works on Macs with Apple silicon (M1 or later) and on Intel Macs.
  • Your music is available while your Mac is on and awake. While plugged in, the station keeps your Mac from going to sleep on its own; on battery, or with the lid closed, your Mac sleeps and the station is offline until it wakes.
  • Music in your Music folder or in /Users/Shared can be imported right away. For music on an external drive, or in Documents or Downloads, you first need to allow access in System Settings (Privacy & Security → Full Disk Access).
  • Within a few seconds of installing, macOS may ask whether to allow "sontrove-remote" (Sontrove's remote-connection component) to find devices on your local network. We recommend clicking "Allow". If you click "Don't Allow", Sontrove still works: phones on the same Wi-Fi can connect and play as usual. Your choice is remembered, and automatic updates won't ask again. To change it later, go to System Settings → Privacy & Security → Local Network.
  • To uninstall, run in Terminal: sudo sh /usr/local/lib/sontrove/install-macos.sh --uninstall (the installer package has no separate uninstaller).

No Raspberry Pi? Use your Windows PC

Open PowerShell as administrator (right-click the Start button, then choose Terminal (Admin) or Windows PowerShell (Admin)), then paste and run this command. It sets up the media station as a Windows service that starts with your PC, and opens the web admin page when it's done.

iwr -UseBasicParsing https://get.sontrove.com/install.ps1 -OutFile $env:TEMP\sontrove-install.ps1; powershell -ExecutionPolicy Bypass -File $env:TEMP\sontrove-install.ps1
  • Requires Windows 11, 64-bit (Intel/AMD or Arm).
  • Your music is available while your PC is on and not asleep. While it sleeps or is shut down, the station is offline. Windows usually goes to sleep on its own after a while, even when plugged in; you can change this in Settings → System → Power.
  • Listening on the same network, such as your home Wi-Fi, is free. To listen from other networks, subscribe to Remote access.

The Intel/AMD build has so far been tested only under emulation on an Arm PC, not yet on an actual Intel/AMD PC. If it doesn't work on your PC, please tell us (include what the command printed).
